The Standard First Aid – Recertification (Canadian Red Cross) course is designed for participants who already hold a valid Standard First Aid certification and need to renew their credentials. This comprehensive refresher training reviews and updates essential first aid and CPR skills, including emergency response, injury care, medical emergencies, and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).Delivered by certified Canadian Red Cross instructors, this recertification program ensures participants remain confident, current, and compliant with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards across Canada. Successful completion provides a renewed 3-year nationally recognized Canadian Red Cross certification in Standard First Aid & CPR.


Syllabus

The Standard First Aid – Recertification course is a refresher program that reviews and updates essential first aid and CPR skills. Participants will cover the following:


1. Introduction & Review

  • Course objectives and updates to Red Cross guidelines

  • Responsibilities of the first aider

  • Legal considerations (consent, duty of care, workplace requirements)


2. Assessment & Emergency Response

  • Scene assessment and safety

  • Primary survey (checking responsiveness, airway, breathing, circulation)

  • Secondary survey (history taking and vital signs)


3. Airway, Breathing & Circulation Emergencies

  • Adult, child, and infant CPR (one rescuer)

  • Use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

  • Management of choking (adult, child, infant)

  • Breathing emergencies (asthma, allergic reactions, hyperventilation)

  • Circulatory emergencies (heart attack, angina, stroke, shock)


4. Medical Emergencies

  • Seizures, diabetes, fainting

  • Severe allergic reactions and use of epinephrine auto-injectors


5. Injury Management

  • Wounds and bleeding control

  • Head, neck, and spinal injuries (review)

  • Bone, muscle, and joint injuries

  • Burns (thermal, chemical, electrical)


6. Environmental Emergencies

  • Heat-related and cold-related emergencies (heat stroke, hypothermia, frostbite)

  • Poisons and hazardous materials exposure


7. Special Topics & Scenarios

  • Workplace-specific risks (customized scenarios)

  • Review of real-life case studies

  • Hands-on skill practice and testing


8. Testing & Certification

  • Skills demonstration (practical evaluation)

  • Written knowledge review (as required)

  • Issuance of a Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid & CPR certificate (valid for 3 years)
